Echoed Margins

1. When I’m out field recording the outfit I feel most “at home” in derives from the aesthetic pleasure I get from wearing the clothes themselves and has little to do with the practicality of its relation to the environment. So usually this means I’d be wearing a pair of boots, levis 501s and a vintage sweater or button-up, which is a bit of a uniform for myself these days.

2. Not particularly in the way I listen or move but if I don’t like or feel comfortable in the outfit I’m wearing it makes it difficult to enjoy or feel motivated to go out and record in the first place.

3. There is one instance when I was recording at dawn on Mount Mingus (which is located in the black hills mountain range of central Arizona) I was able to capture the delicate sound of the first snowfall of the season. The only article of clothing I remember wearing was a 70s era Sears cable knit wool sweater.

4. If I was to create my dream field recording outfit it would be modeled after 1950s hunting attire, which in my opinion perfectly balances form, function and organic materials.

5. For me the act of field recording is a practice of being present. I’ll often use the documentation component as a form of accountability to myself to be still and quiet for as long as possible in order to have less effect on the environment I’m recording.
