Echoed Margins

Sometimes I walk to make recordings with my whole body. Rather than stay still and quiet in a listening position, walking-listening allows the sounds of my body into the recording, even amplifying them somehow. The recording might be a sound file, a line drawing, a series of photographs, a text, or only my memory of the route.

1. Friction Suit

A tapered jacket and pants of slightly coarse material (like wool or corduroy) so that friction is produced while walking. Small sensors convert the friction of my pacing to electricity so a small recording device with binaural and contact microphones receives enough power to record in short pulses. The suit is accompanied by a hat made from a thin, flexible solar panel to provide additional charge to the recorder. The effect of the field recording is like hearing short bursts of sound when powering up a hand-crank emergency radio.

2. Camera Jumpsuit

A lightweight linen jumpsuit with a slightly loose fit. Pinhole cameras are sewn into the chest, back, and sides of each hip so that images can be made in four directions at once, from two different heights according to body proportions. A shutter-release cable is connected to a lever in the knee of the right leg so that the exposure of the photographs follows my walking as one leg goes down then up again, however steady or slowly exaggerated the pace. The number and position of cameras in this jumpsuit is variable.

3. Seismograph Belt

A light sweatshirt and comfortable jeans for a long-distance walk. Around the waist, a brace extends forward from a belt with two bars angled at 90 degrees. This holds two rolls of receipt paper, each at arm’s length. While walking and holding two ink pens against the paper, the receipt rolls wrap onto a second bar while recording the seismogram of my body in transit over different kinds of terrain. This makes a linear field recording. The length of the paper receipt roll determines the distance of the walk.
