The only experience I can truly call field recording was a trip with friends to Menghuan Lake on Yangmingshan. We recorded the sound of the cicadas at dusk — they would call out in waves, their collective chorus resembling the sound of ocean waves crashing through the air.
That recording was later played during a performance we did together.
I don’t remember exactly what I wore, probably something comfortable, easy to move in, and okay to get dirty. Menghuan Lake isn’t a hard place to reach, so I likely wasn’t dressed too functionally or with technical gear. The only thing I clearly remember is wearing a thin sun-protective jacket.
When it comes to recording, I think about the interaction between subjectivity and objectivity. Whether it’s sound, image, or text — the act of recording opens a kind of seam between the everyday and the extraordinary. When attention is given, when awareness is engaged, an interaction or connection begins to form. We become aware of the act itself, and how we choose to respond to it.
Dissolving into the environment might be the best way to preserve the moment we want to record. But once the intention to record arises, an interaction begins between the recorder and the subject. This connection feels special and subjective, and it often leaves ripples or transformed attachments in its wake.
When facing people, things, or places, I find it hard to remain in a purely conceptual or mental mode. My senses always respond — there is always a felt reaction. Perhaps a so-called objective recording, from the very moment the intention arises, is already shaped by consciousness. And over time, it becomes entangled with other emotions and thoughts.
