Erin Demastes
Often my field recording trips include venturing deep into nature. Most of my trips have been in either Louisiana or California which have very different environments. For California, I use a lot of sun protection— hat, sunglasses, long sleeve shirt, loose clothing to allow for movements and the knowledge that even though it is warm outside, there will be some sort of breeze. No insects, so no worries about long pants, protective socks, and repellent. I bring extra water since my trips are normally to the desert or grasslands and have little or no shade.
For Louisiana, on the other hand, I don’t need as much sun protection due to the many trees and foliage that will surround me on my walk. I typically wear more flexible clothing and make sure to wear long pants, thick socks, and waterproof shoes. There are a lot of mosquitoes and insects that bite, and the ground is soggier and sometimes flooded. There won’t be a breeze, so I tend to wear sleeveless shirts with insect repellent and moisture wicking clothing to help with the humidity. The Louisiana landscape can change rapidly and has no elevation, so I always bring rain gear, a map, and extra snacks in case I get turned around.
Bonus Interview Questions or Side Story Q&A:
Q1.I’d like to ask Erin: In your small motorized installations, is there a connection to the bodily memories you have from field recording? For example, the way you listened to insects and birds, and the vibrational frequencies of space.
Let me think about that! I feel like they are, but maybe not consciously? Because with many of my installations, people comment they remind them of the swamp, insects, or something from nature, even though I don’t always intentionally make it so. Funny how that happens isn’t it??
