This is a question I hadn’t really thought about before.
Normally, I just wear my everyday clothes without making any particular choices.
If I had to emphasize something, I would say: it’s best to choose clothing that blends into the environment, something inconspicuous.
Ideally, it would feel like wearing an invisibility cloak, drawing no attention. Because once you are noticed, people’s behavior changes — and so do the sounds they make.
Perhaps animals would sense the disturbance even before humans do, or perhaps they would adjust their reactions based on how people respond.
So it’s not just about clothing. One’s demeanor should also remain low-key, natural, and composed.
For example, in an uninhabited forest, wearing a tailcoat — even if it didn’t disturb the flight of insects — would still make me feel out of place, like introducing an alien symbol into an otherwise self-contained, coherent system.
Of course, there are exceptions.
Some recordings are meant to highlight my presence —
where I am actively participating in, influencing, even stirring and performing with the environment.
