Echoed Margins

Thank you for your letter. In fact, I don’t have much experience with field recording, as it’s not my main focus in music. Perhaps because of this, I haven’t particularly thought about the issue of "clothing."

"Anything works," could be my first answer. If my clothes end up affecting the sound (does that really happen?), then those sounds would simply become part of the environment, which I can accept—this would be my second answer. As for "are there any sounds that are unacceptable in field recording?"—this would be my third answer, or rather, a question I have.

I think I would wear clothes that make me feel comfortable, just like when I go out normally. Though I don’t consciously think about it, I guess I do subconsciously make some selections. Maybe occasionally, I would pay extra attention and avoid wearing synthetic materials that might create friction sounds. However, in my limited experiences using a binaural microphone for recording, I’m not sure if my outer collar ever brushed against the mic wires... I hope it didn’t.

I’d also like to share an experience. Last year, I recorded in a more sensitive location, and to avoid drawing attention, I used two cheap clip-on microphones. That day, I wore a faux military-style leather jacket, placed the recorder in my pocket, and clipped the two microphones onto the shoulder epaulettes of the jacket. Perhaps this was my only time considering clothing from the perspective of field recording.
